Weekend Deliveries

We had a gruelling drive to Scotland at the weekend to deliver Emily and her mate with my Dad for a weeks holiday. It would normally take me no longer than about 5.5 to 6 hours but a combination of road works and heavy traffic pushed it over the 7 hour mark. Pretty much all of it was up to and including Glasgow but the remaining drive towards Oban was pleasant as always. The few slower cars encountered were brushed aside with a bit of overtaking which is always a pleasure as the roads down towards Inverary are great to drive at speed (although within the speed limits – honest ;) ).

After a short walk on the beach, a curry takeout and an early night we were up early on Sunday with the intention of taking my Dad’s fishing boat, which I had yet to see since he got it, out for a trip. The sea was kind to us and it was calm with a slight breeze and it wasn’t long before we got the rods over the back. Emily and her mate pulled up six mackerel although one escaped off the hook and two were thrown back on account of their size. Still enough for lunch.

We headed back to the harbour just before the rain started as if it knew that we were about to drive home. Having dropped everyone back at Tralee we got on the road and faced pretty much the same roadworks we’d seen on the way up. This time though we had torrential rain pretty much until we reached the English border. From there the temperatures steadily rose until we got out of the car at home at which point stepping out of the air conditioned car was similar to stepping out of a plane and being greeted by a rush of hot air. It took the edge off the fact that the return journey had taken 6.5 hours.

We are having the changeover next weekend and I’ll be taking James and his mate up and collecting Emily. Luckily I don’t have to do it all again as we are meeting halfway.

One of these days I’ll have a holiday for myself.
